The Nara period, when the capital was located in Heijokyo, was a short period of 74 years, but during this period many heritage sites were built and have been passed down to the present day.
During the Nara period, Buddhist culture centered on aristocrats prospered under the influence of the culture transmitted from China by envoys to Tang China, international students, and monks.
In a short period of 74 years, the construction of the world’s largest Buddha, Japan’s oldest history books “Kojiki” and “Nihonshoki”, and Japan’s oldest waka collection “Manyoshu” were compiled.
There are three World Heritage Sites in Nara Prefecture.
