In 1872, the government established the “Naito Shinjuku Proving Ground” for the purpose of promoting modern agriculture in Japan on the site that combines the land of the Naito family and the adjacent land.
In 1879, it became Shinjuku Botanical Garden under the jurisdiction of the Imperial Household Ministry, and in 1906, Shinjuku Gyoen was opened.
